2-Day Imlil to Tacheddirt Trek through the Imnane Valley

Moderate. It is 22 km over two days, about five hours of walking on day one and six on day two, on mule tracks and village paths. The climbing comes in two steady stretches: 539m from Imlil up to Tizi n’Tamatert on the first morning, and 493m from Ikkiss to the Agersioual pass on the second. Nothing is technical, and the high point is 2,291m, so altitude is not a factor.

If you can comfortably walk for several hours on varied ground, you will enjoy it. Previous hiking experience helps but is not essential.

No. This is the one valley trek where the Marrakech transfer is not included, which is part of why it is our lowest-priced trek. The walk starts and finishes in Imlil, so you make your own way there and back.

Imlil is about 65 km from Marrakech, roughly an hour and a half by road, and a grand taxi or a private transfer both work. Tell us when you enquire and we can arrange a transfer for you at extra cost, or see our Marrakech to Imlil guide for the options. The other valley treks include return transport in the price.

The trek is possible from April to November. Spring (April-May) offers beautiful wildflowers and mild temperatures. Summer (June-August) is hot during the day but still enjoyable at higher elevations. Autumn (September-November) provides stable weather and clear mountain views. Snow can sit on Tizi n’Tamatert and the Agersioual pass in winter, so tell us your dates and we will confirm whether the route is open.

We recommend bringing comfortable hiking boots (already broken in), layered clothing (temperatures can vary significantly between day and night), a light waterproof jacket, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), a small daypack, a water bottle, and any personal medications. East of Imlil, over the Tizi n’Tamatert pass. It is also known as the Imnane (or Imenane) valley, and the village at its head, Tacheddirt at 2,291m, is one of the highest in the High Atlas; you will also see it written Tachdirt, as in this page's address. You sleep a little below it, at the village of Oinskra.

The Azzaden valley is the equivalent walk on the other side of Imlil, to the west.

In a traditional Berber gîte, a simple family-run guesthouse, at Oinskra in the Tacheddirt valley, with bivouac as an alternative. Accommodation is basic but comfortable, typically with shared rooms and bathroom facilities, and it comes with home-cooked meals and genuine Berber hospitality.

No, your main luggage is carried by mule between overnight stops. You only need a small daypack with water, camera, sunscreen and an extra layer.

Yes, all meals on the trek are included: one breakfast, two lunches and one dinner, cooked by the Berber cook who travels with you. Meals feature Moroccan cuisine prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Please tell us of any dietary requirements when booking.

Yes. The 3 Valleys trek covers this same ground over three days, crossing Tizi n’Tamatert and the Agersioual pass before continuing into the Azzaden valley, and the four-day Berber villages trek is longer again. Both include return transport from Marrakech.

Yes, we welcome solo travellers. You may be asked to share a room at the gîte with another trekker of the same gender unless you opt for a single supplement (subject to availability).
