Mountain rescue in the High Atlas mountain of Morocco

Despite the increasing numbers of trekkers in the Atlas Mountains, there remains no official mountain rescue service. Although official mountain guides qualify in basic first aid as first aid as part of their training, they are only taught how to deal with injuries such open wounds and broken bones. The best response to a serious accident from most points in the mountains is to return to the nearest trailhead by mule and from there to the nearest town by road. If, however, the accident is too serious for your patient to travel in this way, you should call upon the rescue helicopter (Heliconia Group, 0802006565, contact@heliconia-aero.com) stationed in Marrakech.
